This year the pastor Gustav Bergmann published the first collection of Latvian folksong texts. He had collected those himself, he covered the publishing expenses. The book was printed in very few copies, still the texts have been reprinted in "Latvju Dainas" compiled and edited by Krisjanis Barons. The first volume contains 238 texts of different length. A year later the second volume is published with additional 249 folksong textsand some riddles. The published texts differ by content and form, the language indicates misunderstandings, both the traditional folksongs and more recent borrowed texts are published side by side. Of course, this publication shows what was actually sung by Latvians in Northern Vidzeme around the turn of the 19th century, as this is the earliest folksong text publication in Latvian.
